Divorce - The legal separation of man and wife, effected, for cause, by the judgment, of a court and either totally dissolving the marriage relation, or suspending its effects so far as concerns the cohabitation of the parties. Black's Law Dictionary, Revised Fourth Edition (1968)
In 1986, the practice of divorce law in Wisconsin changed when the marital property laws went into effect. At that time, Wisconsin law also changed from a state requiring "cause" for a divorce, to a "no fault" state. Today, many parties involved in a divorce choose to proceed without an attorney (pro se). This may not be a wise choice depending upon each individual's situation.
What are your legal rights in a divorce? Are there children involved? If so, will either party need to pay child support? Are you entitled to maintenance (formerly known as alimony)? What are the tax benefits/consequences regarding the payment of child support and maintenance, family support, or Section 71 payments?
These are just some of the questions that Kuehn Law Offices, LLC can assist you with.
